- Steel slide (dark, matte finish): surface temperature reached 60°C.
These results demonstrate that colour and finish play a critical role in surface temperature. Light, polished steel surfaces reflect more solar radiation, making them cooler than dark plastic or matte-finished steel.
Ways to Cool Down Slides
Regardless of the material, several effective solutions can help reduce slide heating:
- Playground shading – Sunshades or trees provide natural shade, minimising sun exposure.
- Light-coloured finishes – Surfaces in light colours reflect more sunlight than dark ones, reducing heat buildup.
- Thermal coatings – Modern heat-reducing coatings can be applied to metal surfaces.
- Regular cooling with water – On the hottest days, playground operators can periodically spray slides with water.
